Develop and manage communication systems for academic scientists

There are overwhelming enthusiasm and demands among Japanese academic scientists for holding international scientific conferences in Japan. However, the lack of systems for operating such events focused on academic research creates great burden on organizers. Time commitment, language barriers, administrative burden, and unaffordable commercial event organization systems for planning and managing registration and abstract submission are tremendous responsibilities for organizers. We support academic researchers in organizing conferences through development and management of our own communication systems.

Advocate basic science research and create matching opportunities

We believe that scientific achievements by academic basic research supported by the society through taxation and other forms should be returned to the society. We promote communications between the academic science community and the society. We provide training for academic scientists that are focused on communication skills on their scientific interests and achievement in layman’s words. We also organize public events that involve both scientists and general audience and develop and manage webpages where scientists and the general readers can actively communicate. We would like to create matching opportunities between corporation and scientists.

Provide career development opportunities for students and early career scientists

Insufficient career development support for science undergraduate and graduate students often make it difficult for them to seek possibilities of their careers among various professions including alternative careers. We assist young scientists to find their career goals and plans to achieve them. We support students and early career scientists through career advice and support by various mechanisms including career fairs and business skill development training.

Science school for children “Science Kids”

In order to learn the basics of natural science firmly, we place importance on “quantitative experiments and observations” and create programs with the supervision of university professors. We prepare a curriculum that uses the five senses, not a passive class, and develops the ability to “awareness”.

Advocate basic science by enhancing communication

In every industrialized country, basic science contributes to the strong foundation and development of the nation. Basic academic science has established strong scientific and technological base in Japan. It also has been leading many areas of research worldwide. However, the outstanding performance of the nation’s basic science is often overlooked by the general society. The difficulties on envisioning long-term goals and applications as well as the demands for immediate benefits create adverse effects for basic science to be recognized as a critical investment for long-term advancement of the country. Multiple layers of issues including the declining government support for basic science, the poor communication between basic scientists and the society, and unbalanced media exposures on issues related to basic research, deepens the divide between scientists and the broader audience.
We founded IDOBATA to challenge such problems. We are a strong advocate of Japanese basic science. We achieve our goals by enhancing the return of scientific findings to the society. Our approaches consist of multiple mechanisms to promote bilateral communications between the basic scientific community and the society and to assist information sharing among scientists.
Our company’s name IDOBATA came form a Japanese term “idobata meeting”, meaning a casual chitchat on a street representing an active communication of all parties involved. By lowering the boundaries between the basic science community and the society, we build broad and active conversations like idobata meeting between the parties with accurate information. We believe that active communications between scientists and the society is a way to help winning a broad support for basic science, whose achievements eventually come back to support continuous advance of the country.
In 2017, we kicked off our work as IDOBATA with a project focused on the development of a communication system on academic research information sharing. This project is aimed to enhance communication among academic scientists in Japan. We are extending our work to broaden such communications that involve international scientists, researchers in industrial sectors, and the general society.
